Plot[]
After regenerating his eyes and escaping Eric's dungeon in Nine Princes of Amber, Corwin tries to muster a force once more. While gunpowder does not function in Amber, he knows of a substance, Jeweler's Rouge, that will, and can be used as such. He walks in shadow and by accident meets Ganelon (or rather, who he believes is Ganelon...), a man who he exiled while ruling a shadow world known as Avalon (probably a parody of the legendary island). They join forces against strange forces who are attacking the land over which Ganelon rules. They find Benedict, ruling over a shadow of Avalon, and Dara, future mother of Corwin's son, Merlin. They leave the shadow-Avalon, but Benedict pursues them, in a fit of rage, accusing them of the murder of his servants, whose bodies Corwin and Ganelon found the day before their departure. Benedict is knocked unconcious, and Corwin calls on Gerard to help him. Later, they discover a strange Black Road stretching towards Amber. They find Jeweler's Rouge, and muster their forces in one final attack on Amber (Corwin's previous attempt with Bleys having failed). Ganelon helps him (Oberon having previously voiced his support for Corwin when Corwin managed to contact him via his trump in Nine Princes of Amber), and they win, Corwin taking the Jewel of Judgement from Eric's dead breast. Later, they find Dara walking the pattern, succeeding, and naming herself an enemy of Amber.
